New Macbook – Quick Summary

Apple released a new Macbook today. It is the thinnest laptop that Apple has produced at 13.1mm thick and weighs 2 lbs. To compare the Macbook Air I am writing this on is 17MM thick and just under 3 lbs.

The new screen is a 12 inch retina display which features a resolution of 2304 x 1440. This means you can watch movies in full HD (1080p).

The keyboard has been redesigned with metal switches and a new ‘butterfly’ mechanism which Apple claims will distributes the force of a keystroke more evenly. This will also result in a more firmer feel when typing.

The trackpad has been updated to a new Force Touch trackpad which uses four sensors mounted in the corners to allow for a more uniform feedback. It will also feature Force Click which allows extra clickable feature to apps. It will be interesting to see what app designers come up with this new feature.

Like the iPhone you will be able to get it in three colours which are silver, space grey and gold.

As for ports, there is only a single USB-C port. USB-C offers the ability for power, video and data using the same cable. If you want to drive a second monitor and have a usb accessory, then you will have to purchase a $99 adapter which will give you that option. For some users they will never need this, for others who like to use a second monitor and have usb accessories this will be something to think about.

USB-C does have advantages including that the cable can be plugged in either way. Having one type or port certainly saves weight and simplifies motherboard design. We will have to see if accessory market takes to this better then it did thunderbolt.

Final thoughts.
The Macbook is a very light but capable machine. Keep in mind the processor is actually slightly less powerful then what is in the current generation of the Macbook Air. What you are paying a premium for is the retina display and the smaller size. I’m looking forward to seeing these in the store to try it.
