Xmarks Bookmark Service Closing (or not?)
Xmarks is a browser add on for all the major leading browsers. I’ve been using for several years and it does an excellent job. In a nutshell it keeps a copy of your browser bookmarks (or favorites in IE speak) to the cloud and allows you to synchronize them over multiple computers. It will also synchronize your bookmarks over different browsers (E.G. From Firefox to Chrome)
Because of these features it’s also an idea way to keep a backup of your bookmarks to save time when installing a new computer. It falls under my “keep it simple” philosophy in ease of use and simplicity.
Recently Xmarks posted that they will be shutting down the service at the end of the year. More information is provided at the CTO’s Blog posting. They also go onto to give some alternatives for each browser type. Unfortunately none of these products will work with more then one type of browser which for me was one of the key features of Xmarks.
Update: Another blog posting from Xmarks today indicates that they may have some potential buyers, In addition the company has put up a pledge page to see how many people would be interested in paying a yearly fee for the service.
