10 simple ways to get work done
With all of the distractions in today’s world, just getting some time to get the work done can be challenging. Here are 10 simple ways to help you get work done.
1. Get ample sleep.
You can’t begin to become more productive if you don’t have enough sleep. If can be tough to get to bed earlier but it is a very important first step.
2. Set clear goals.
Select 2-3 tasks you want to get done and write them down. Some people prefer to do this the evening before, this way you have a clear idea on what needs to be done.
3. Focus on one thing at a time.
Being able to focus on a single thing can be very productive. When possible turn off all notifications on your computer and other devices. Turn off the ringer on your cell phone or set it to go to voice-mail. If working in an open environment, putting headphones on is a sign you don’t want to be disturbed. Resist the urge to check email or social media.
4. Sometimes music, sometimes silence.
Depending on your mood find a playlist that will work for you. I tend to have different ones depending on my mood that day. Sometimes just silence can make me the most productive. Some other days I will use white noise such as a clock ticking to keep me in the zone.
5. Keep Capture Tools handy.
When you are focusing on one thing sometimes other thoughts will creep in that you want to remember. Have an easy capture tool on hand. such as a software tool like Evernote or even pencil and paper. This will allow you to capture the idea and then get back to the task you are focusing on.
6. Declutter.
Decluttering is another way to eliminate distractions. If your desk, office and head are clear, you are minimizing the possibilities for distractions. If you do get into the habit of doing a weekly declutter or in GTD terms a weekly review, you can start the week relaxed, focused and ready for action.
7. Work but also take a break.
Being in the zone is great and the time can fly by, but at least every 60-90 min take the time to stand up, stretch and step back from the task at hand. Find something to take you away for 5 to 15 min. A walk around the block for example. You will feel refreshed and ready to continue the current task or tackle the next thing that is on your list for the day.
8. Get fit.
In relation to the previous tip, try and stay active. Make some time to do some physical activity everyday. Eventually it will become a regular habit.
9. Change location.
Sometimes where you are is not going to work. In my home office I sometimes have cats who want to ‘visit’ when they should be napping. Other times I need a different environment to get inspired. Over the holiday season I was at home so much that after a while I went to a coffee shop for a few hours to work just to reinforce there are other people in the world! If you have this option it’s work looking at.
