Last Wednesday, Google announced that it was planning to discontinue Google Reader.  This surprised and angered quite a few people online and immediately people started looking for a replacement.

I’ve been using Google Reader for quite awhile and I love the 3rd party integration like Evernote and Buffer. being able to access it from a number of platforms was also an plus.

When I started looking for a Google Reader replacement there were several criteria I was looking for.

  • Multiplatform.  Mac, PC, Web and Mobile. I often catch up on RSS feeds when I have a few minutes during the day. Sometimes I’m at home and sometimes on the road.
  • Third party integration. I love being able to send a story to Evernote, or Buffer with one or two clicks.
  • Easy migration of my RSS feeds from Google Reader.  I have about 100 feeds but I know of some people who have much more. Having to manually add those again would be a pain.

I’ve looked at a few products and I have found Feedly has met these needs plus a few more.

  • Different viewing options.
  • A native IOS version
  • Same key combinations as Reader so I don’t have to learn another set of shortcuts.

As we approach the shutdown date for Google Reader in July, I’m sure we will see some more products out there but right now Feedly has the early advantage.
